Daniel Munday, Principal Analyst, VT Markets
Gold is currently being influenced more by expectations regarding interest rates than by fear. Although tensions in Iran usually have a supportive effect on gold, this time they are pushing up oil prices and yields, which in turn increases the opportunity cost of holding gold. That is the reason it is still hovering at $4,200, a figure well below the record set in January.
Bets regarding the October rise in the markets have been reduced following the softer NFP, though December is still seen as the most likely option, so tomorrow’s US CPI and the FOMC meeting on October 28 will be the next tests.
The fact that there has been a series of weekly inflows into ETFs suggests that investors are taking the drop as an opportunity to increase their holdings and hedge against uncertainty rather than simply trying to buy low. This is an indication of confidence in the longer-term outlook and could go on as long as expectations regarding interest rates stabilise. However, it might be brought to a quick halt if inflation comes in hotter and further rate hikes are priced in.
